Working Around High Voltage Lines

Everyone in an industrial plant should make safe behavior part of an everyday routine.

Recognize, report and correct all potential electrical hazards.

Look out for your co-workers and your workplace in general.

Talk to your supervisor about hazards that have been reported but not yet corrected.

Take the time to be safe. Cutting corners on safety procedures causes accidents.

Stay alert and focused. Be aware of changing conditions. Don't let fatigue or your emotions cloud your judgment.

 

 

There are several general electrical safety rules which apply to the workplace:

Avoid damp and wet areas when working with electrical tools.

Avoid dirt, oil, and grime buildup on machinery or tools. This can cause them to overheat.

Keep the general work area free of oil, dirt and grime.

When cleaning equipment, disconnect, lockout/tagout or unplug them first. Always follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. You should know and observe company lockout and tagout procedures for heavy electrical equipment.

Make sure there are no obstructions limiting air circulation near the ventilation openings of all electrical equipment. Such a condition can cause motors and circuits to overheat.

Check pieces of heavy electrical equipment and their enclosures for permanent grounds. If there are none, ground exposed parts of all fixed equipment which could become energized.

Don't remove safety shields from electrical equipment. These are designed to protect you from accidental contact with energized parts.

Any piece of equipment which malfunctions or behaves suspiciously should be immediately shut off at its disconnect switch. A red warning tag or a lock should be placed on the switch to prevent its use until the equipment is repaired by a qualified technician.

Short circuits in both wiring and equipment are major causes of fires. Special attention should be paid to both.

When problems occur, workers need to immediately shut off power to affected circuits and equipment. Therefore, all fuses, circuit beakers and disconnect switches must be identified. This information must be posted on panel board directories.


What to do if you make contact with electrical wires.

If you make contact with a high voltage line while operating heavy equipment, take the following precautions:

1. If possible, stay on the equipment until help arrives. Avoid touching any metal parts, and try to break the contact by moving the machine.

2. If it is absolutely necessary to exit the machine, jump as far out as possible. Land with both feet together and hop-- don't walk or run-- as far away as possible.

3. When electricity makes contact with the ground, the earth becomes energized for a good distance around the contact; this is called the "ground gradient." The strength of the electrical charge decreases from the point of contact. This is why it is vital not to separate your feet since there may be a difference in the electrical potential under each foot which could create an electrical path through your body if your feet are apart.

4. For the same reason, don't rush to a person who has come into contact with a high voltage line, and don't attempt to touch him or her until power has been shut off.
